Safety
Self Defense Courses
Personal safety is a perennial concern both on and off campus, especially for women. We believe all women should be provided with real-scenario self-defense lessons to prepare them for any situation. Though we hope the tactics learned will never have to be put to the test, we believe all women should be prepared.
Increased Miami Door-to-Door
Presently, it can be difficult to contact drivers for Miami Door-to-Door due to high demand. We will eliminate that stress by creating a new program to increase the number of drivers and cars available to ensure that all students can make it home safely from anywhere in Oxford.
Emergency Call Boxes
Although existing emergency call boxes are not used often, they do provide a deterrent effect where they are available. Currently, Miami’s campus has fewer of these emergency call boxes than other comparable campuses, and the off campus area has none. We will work with the City of Oxford and the University to ensure that more call boxes are placed in appropriate commercial and residential areas within Oxford.
Off-Campus Lighting
Many students wonder why there seems to be more lighting on campus than off campus. We believe lighting can be an important deterrent to dangerous situations, whether it be going home from the library or heading Uptown. We will work with the City of Oxford to ensure that all lights off campus are working and that dark streets are illuminated.
